Humanitarian Crises in Sudan and Palestine: A Call for Urgent Action
More on Human Rights: A Newsletter by ACHRS
In this edition, we highlight two urgent humanitarian crises. In Sudan, the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has caused catastrophic loss of life, widespread displacement, and worsened by climate-related disasters. Over 27,000 people have died, and millions have been displaced. Meanwhile, in Palestine, escalating violence in Gaza and the West Bank has led to severe human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings and mass detentions. This newsletter provides in-depth reports on these critical issues and their broader impact on justice, stability, and human rights.
Sudan: The Human Cost of the Civil War
Sudan is currently enduring one of the deadliest conflicts of the 21st century, marked by profound human rights abuses and widespread humanitarian suffering. Since the war erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the country has been plunged into chaos, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The conflict has led to a wave of atrocities, including extrajudicial killings, torture, sexual violence, and mass displacement.
Over 27,000 lives have been lost, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. The scale of displacement is staggering, with 5.4 million people internally displaced and over 3 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries like Chad, South Sudan, Libya, and Egypt. Refugee camps, already struggling with shortages of resources, are further overwhelmed by climate-induced disasters such as flooding and extreme heat, compounding the crisis of war and environmental collapse. This grim reality underscores the vulnerability of millions caught in the crossfire of conflict and climate change.
Regions like El Geneina in West Darfur and Al Jazirah have become epicenters of violence, where ethnic cleansing and mass atrocities are all too common. In El Geneina, entire communities have been destroyed, with men and boys executed and women subjected to systematic sexual violence. In Al Jazirah, retaliatory RSF attacks have killed hundreds, displaced tens of thousands, and devastated the Shukriya ethnic group. Tactics such as sieges, poisoning food supplies, and indiscriminate attacks on civilians reflect a deliberate effort to crush resistance and assert control.

Palestine: Escalating Atrocities Amidst Global Silence
In November 2024, the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank continued to deteriorate, marked by violence, destruction, and systemic oppression. The ongoing genocide in Gaza, led by occupying forces, has caused catastrophic loss of life, devastated infrastructure, and triggered an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
Reports of extrajudicial killings, mass detentions, and the deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid have intensified the crisis. In the West Bank, the violence of occupation has escalated, with a surge in settlement expansion, extrajudicial killings, and the systematic destruction of Palestinian infrastructure.
Palestinians in the occupied territories face widespread torture, arbitrary detention, and violations of their fundamental human rights, drawing global condemnation. However, international responses have been mixed, with some calling for accountability and increased aid, while others remain complicit through silence or support for the occupation.
This report provides an in-depth look at the ongoing atrocities in Palestine, exploring their broader implications for justice, stability, and human rights in the region.
